The Federal Highway Administration, which has taken over the project to build a new Tappan Zee Bridge, will present its vision for the span at briefing sessions on Tuesday and Thursday, at which there will be opportunity for public input.
So far, the FHA has yet to reveal whether there will be a bike and pedestrian facility on the new bridge. So it’s crucial for proponents of access for cyclists and pedestrians to voice their support for such a facility.
In addition, Greenburgh Supervisor Paul Feiner has suggested that the old Tappan Zee, which will be retired when the new one is built, be preserved, and serve as a three-mile long park. There are many issues involved here, including the stability of the bridge, what it would cost to transform into a park, and maintain it. But a growing number of preservations are calling on the federal government to explore possible reuse as world-class recreation destinations.
There will be two sessions:
Tuesday, Oct. 25: Doubletree Hotel Tarrytown , 455 South Broadway, Tarrytown. Open house – 4 to 9 p.m. Presentations at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Thursday Oct. 27: Palisades Center Adler Room, 1000 Palisades Center Dr., West Nyack, NY. Open house – 4 to 9 p.m. Presentations at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
After each presentation, the public will be given the opportunity to comment. Those wishing to speak must register by 5.30 p.m for the first session, and 7.30 p.m. for the second session.
